Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate (approximately 2.5 hours). After registration and packing, begin your trek through the lush rainforest. The trail is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp for dinner and overnight. The camp is situated in a beautiful forest clearing.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
The trail continues ascending as you leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zones. The landscape opens up dramatically, offering spectacular views of Shira Ridge and Mount Meru in the distance.
Arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the Shira Plateau, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Today’s walk is short and gentle, perfect for acclimatization. The trail crosses the Shira Plateau, offering incredible views of Kibo Peak and the Western Breach.
Arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where you’ll have time to rest and explore the area. This is an important acclimatization day before ascending to higher elevations.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
This is one of the most spectacular days on the Lemosho Route. The trail crosses the Lava Tower, which rises to 15,190 feet, providing an excellent acclimatization opportunity before descending to Barranco Camp.
The descent into the Barranco Valley offers breathtaking views of the Barranco Wall and the surrounding glaciers. Arrive at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on the mountain.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Today you tackle the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling but non-technical climb offering spectacular views of the Karanga Valley and surrounding peaks. The wall is steep but manageable, with a well-defined path.
After reaching the top of the wall, the trail continues across rolling ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows additional acclimatization and recovery before moving to higher elevations.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today’s hike is shorter but very important as you make your way to Barafu Camp, the final base camp before the summit attempt. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Upon arrival, enjoy an early dinner, rest, and attend a detailed summit briefing from your guides. Preparation and hydration are essential before the midnight ascent. The camp is situated on a rocky ridge with excellent views of the summit.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak then Mweka Camp
Shortly after midnight, begin your summit push under the stars. The climb is slow and steady as you make your way toward Stella Point (18,885 ft) and finally Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft / 5,895m), the highest point in Africa.
Witness an unforgettable sunrise above the clouds and celebrate your achievement at the summit. After photos and a short break, descend to Barafu Camp for lunch before continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight.
Congratulations! You have conquered the Roof of Africa!
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Transfer to Moshi
